Mu’ta University has aspired to
be a real partner with the Jordanian Center for Civic Education
Studies-California under the umbrella of the Arab Network for Civic Education
(Arab Civitas).
This has been achieved through
a memorandum signed between Mu’ta University and the Jordanian Center for Civic
Education Studies. The execution of this memorandum started on the university
campus during the second semester. The students were introduced to the aims of
Project Citizen, were informed of the concept of civic education and its means
of establishing good citizenship, and were encouraged to be acquainted with
their civil rights and responsibilities. A training session about civic
education was held for them after which they became acquainted with this
project. More than one hundred male and female students from the School of
Education participated in this training session, bearing in mind
that this project would be applied in all the
university areas of study and with students who want to do voluntary work in the
coming semesters.
One of the positive effects of
this project is that it broke the barrier of silence and fear among students and
increased their self confidence. In addition, they are now able to present
problems, dialogue about them objectively and democratically with their
colleagues, and apply the scientific solution to solving them. Training was in
the form of small groups which worked in the spirit of one team. The groups
identified the problem and the extent of suffering it caused the students on
their campus since they have become partners
in shouldering the responsibility. Students were also able to make decisions on
all levels and to present the problem and dialogue about it in a democratic
spirit regardless of their sex. Their meticulous work was exemplified in the
information collection campaign, whereby students played different coordinated
roles in conducting interviews with officials inside and outside the university
as well as in distributing questionnaires among students and working on taking
photographs and documentation.
Students presented several
problems on their campus of interest to them such as preserving university
property, smoking inside the university, and university violence. The university
adopted this project and similar projects which sustain students’ capacities and
enhance their self confidence and their confidence in their homeland. These
projects also make them realize the importance of their citizenship and of their
desired role which is in harmony with the aspiration of His Majesty King
Abdullah the Second, who wants them to become knights of change and patriotic
men in the future. This reflects the awareness of the university regarding the
serious and effective message that will bring awareness to future generations,
equip them to serve their society and nation, and shoulder the responsibility
laid on them in the best possible manner.
